Day 6 Off to school!

Friday was the first day of school visits. What an awesome day! In total we visited three schools where we met with students, teachers, and administrators. It was a very fun day and one that has been a highlight on this trip. When I met with the students, they were so excited to ask questions about America. I met with a number of classes and we talked about life in the United States. They asked questions about school, sports, places to visit, and music. The students were a very energetic, inquisitive bunch. It was very fun to talk with them. After talking with the kids, we had the chance to meet with the principal who was very welcoming and happy to have us at the school. She prepared a nice spread of breads, cakes, and coffee for us eat and drink while talking with other teachers at the school. The art teacher gave us a painting from her students to commemorate our visit. It was a great first visit.

Students with I met during my visit.

After visiting the school in Japeri, we heading back towards Nova Iguacu to talk in small groups with English students at the Carlos Drummundo de Andarde High School. This was an unique bilingual high school sponsored by the United States Consulate in Rio de Janiero. It offers many courses in English and is one of very few in the entire country of Brazil that offers totally bilingual immersion education.

In the evening, we went to Faculdades Machado de Assis University in Santa Cruz, RJ to attend an English class and practice conversational English with the students. Here are a few students that we talked with.

  1. What were some of the differences between the schools you visited and schools in the US?

  2. Did the students ask questions in English? If so, how was their English comparatively speaking to the same level students here? and do they level their classes?
